Silica Gel Blue

Blue silica gel (CAS 112926-00-8) is self-indicating desiccant: silica gel beads impregnated with cobalt chloride that are deep blue when dry and turn pink as they take up moisture, so the state of a dryer, breather or storage pack can be read at a glance. Global Chemicals LLC supplies it in 2–4 mm, 3–5 mm and 4–8 mm beads, moisture capacity 35–40% by weight, bulk density 0.70–0.75 kg/L, regenerable at 120–180 °C, in 1 kg, 5 kg and 25 kg bags and drums from stock in Muscat.

Where the colour matters. Transformer and switchgear breathers, where the maintenance crew checks the colour on the walk-round; sight-glass cartridges on instrument-air and compressed-air dryers; desiccant pots on gas-sampling lines, analysers and control panels; the small bags that travel with spare parts, electronics and precision instruments; and laboratory desiccators. In each case the colour change replaces a humidity reading and tells the user when to regenerate or replace the charge. For bulk gas and air drying where nobody looks at the beads, the white non-indicating gel does the same work at lower cost; for users who want indication without cobalt, the orange gel is the cobalt-free alternative.

Regeneration: spread the pink beads in a shallow tray and heat at 120–180 °C for two to three hours until the blue returns, then cool in a closed container; do not exceed 180 °C, which damages the indicator and the gel structure. Beads survive many cycles until dust and contamination reduce their capacity.

Handling and storage: silica gel itself is inert and non-hazardous, but the cobalt chloride indicator is classified in the European Union as a presumed carcinogen by inhalation and a reproductive toxicant (Carc. 1B, Repr. 1B), where blue indicating gel is restricted, so keep it out of food, pharmaceutical and consumer packaging, use the orange gel there, and avoid breathing the dust when handling or regenerating. Keep bags sealed, because the gel starts absorbing moisture the moment it meets humid Omani air. Every lot carries a certificate of analysis giving moisture capacity, bead size and bulk density, and a safety data sheet.
