Sodium Nitrite

Sodium nitrite (NaNO2, CAS 7632-00-0) is a white to faintly yellow powder supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 98% minimum purity, solubility 82 g per 100 mL at 25 °C, in 25 kg bags, drums and bulk from stock in Muscat, in technical grade for corrosion control and chemical synthesis; food-grade nitrite for curing is a separate, controlled product and is not what this page describes.

Corrosion inhibition. Sodium nitrite is an anodic inhibitor: in the pH 7–10 range it oxidises the steel surface to a thin, tight passive film of ferric oxide that stops oxygen corrosion. It is dosed at 500–2,000 mg/L in closed-loop cooling and chilled-water systems, heat-transfer and glycol circuits, hydrostatic test water, and in the oilfield in packer fluids, completion and workover brines, drilling fluids and pipelines in storage or lay-up. Two rules make it work. First, dose enough: an anodic inhibitor that is under-dosed leaves small unprotected areas that pit faster than bare steel, so the residual is tested and topped up rather than guessed. Second, protect it: nitrite-reducing bacteria eat it, so closed systems carry a biocide alongside it, and chloride and sulphate above a few hundred mg/L raise the dose needed. Chemical uses: the diazotising agent of azo dye, pigment and pharmaceutical synthesis, a reagent for caprolactam and rubber chemicals, a heat-treatment salt component, and a bleaching and phosphating additive.

Handling and storage: sodium nitrite is an oxidiser (UN 1500, Class 5.1) and toxic if swallowed, and it is harmful to aquatic life. Store it sealed, dry and locked, away from acids, which release toxic nitrogen oxides, from ammonium salts and amines, which can form nitrosamines, and from fuels and organics. Wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask, never let it near food or feed, and label dosing tanks clearly. Every lot carries a certificate of analysis giving assay, chloride and moisture, and a GHS safety data sheet.
