Sodium Nitrate
Product Overview
Oxidizing agent for industrial processes.
Detailed Description
Sodium nitrate (NaNO3, CAS 7631-99-4) is a white crystalline oxidising salt supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99% minimum purity, solubility 91 g per 100 mL at 25 °C and melting point 308 °C, in 25 kg and 50 kg bags and bulk from stock in Muscat, to industrial accounts across Oman; it is an oxidiser (UN 1498, Class 5.1) and is sold with the handling guidance below.
Industrial uses. Glass makers add it to the batch as a fining and oxidising agent that removes bubbles and colour from flat, container and specialty glass. Heat-treatment shops use it in molten salt baths, alone or with potassium nitrate and sodium nitrite, for tempering, annealing and bluing steel at 300–550 °C, and the same nitrate mixtures are the heat-transfer and thermal-storage salts of solar-thermal and process plants. Chemical producers use it as an oxidant and a nitrate source in synthesis, in dyes, enamels and pharmaceuticals; concrete producers as a set accelerator and corrosion-inhibiting admixture; and the fertilizer trade as a fast-acting nitrate nitrogen source at 16% N for crops that prefer nitrate in alkaline soils. In the oilfield it appears as a component of some corrosion-inhibitor and brine formulations and, with sodium nitrite, in passivation blends; the oilfield chemicals guide linked on this page lists the related products. Supply for explosives or pyrotechnic manufacture is restricted to licensed accounts.
Handling and storage: sodium nitrate is not flammable itself but makes everything flammable burn fiercely, so store it in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place away from fuels, oils, organic matter, reducing agents, acids and finely divided metals, on pallets and never on wooden or oil-stained floors. Keep bags sealed, because it absorbs moisture and cakes. The dust irritates eyes and airways, and the salt is harmful if swallowed; wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask, and keep it out of food and feed unless the food grade is specified. Every lot carries a certificate of analysis giving assay, chloride and moisture, and a GHS safety data sheet.
