In a demineralisation plant the cation resin exchanges hydrogen ions for dissolved metal cations until it is exhausted. Regeneration passes a dilute hydrochloric acid solution through the bed, displacing the captured cations and restoring the resin to its hydrogen form. Acid strength, flow rate and contact time are set by the resin manufacturer's data sheet; technical-grade 30–33% HCl is diluted to the working concentration on site.
