Soda Ash Dense (Drilling Fluid Grade)

Soda ash dense is the same anhydrous sodium carbonate (Na2CO3, CAS 497-19-8) as the light grade, compacted and recrystallised to a bulk density of 1.0–1.2 kg/L. The heavier granule pours without dust, sinks and wets out in a mud pit instead of floating, and stores without caking as readily. Assay is 99.2% minimum. Global Chemicals LLC holds it in Ghala, Muscat, for drilling contractors, oilfield service companies and water-treatment plants across Oman.

In drilling fluids. Soda ash is the standard treatment for calcium contamination in water-based muds. Added at 0.5–2 lb/bbl it precipitates calcium as calcium carbonate, restoring the performance of bentonite and polymer systems after a cement job or when drilling anhydrite or gypsum. It also raises pH and alkalinity gently (a 1% solution reads pH 11.5–12.0) and softens make-up water before the mud is mixed. Because the reaction product is an inert solid, the mud engineer removes it with normal solids control rather than chemistry.

Other uses. Water-treatment plants use the dense grade for hardness precipitation and pH correction; glass plants prefer it in the batch because it segregates less than light ash; chemical producers use it as a sodium and carbonate source.

Handling and storage. Sodium carbonate is alkaline and mildly irritating to skin and eyes, so gloves and goggles are the normal precaution. It is hygroscopic: keep bags closed and under cover. Shelf life is indefinite when dry.

What to specify when you order. Grade (dense or light), minimum assay, bulk density, and pack: 25 kg bags, 50 kg bags or bulk bags. A certificate of analysis comes with each lot and the SDS on request. Muscat stock ships the same day in the capital area, next day to Sohar, and in two to three days to Salalah, Duqm and Nizwa.
