Sodium Thiosulphate Liquid

Sodium thiosulphate liquid is an aqueous solution of Na2S2O3 (CAS 7772-98-7) supplied at 25–50% strength, pH 8–10, as a clear colourless to pale-yellow liquid. It is the standard reducing agent for destroying residual chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hypochlorite and oxidising biocides: the theoretical need runs from 0.56 to 4.45 mg of sodium thiosulphate per mg of chlorine depending on pH, and practice doses about 1.5–2 mg of active thiosulphate per mg, confirmed by a residual-chlorine test, and the reaction is complete within minutes at ambient temperature. In oilfield service the solution neutralises oxidising biocides and chlorine dioxide in produced water before re-injection, so the oxidiser does not damage the formation or the injection equipment, and it quenches oxidising breakers and residual oxidisers in completion and well-treatment fluids. In wastewater and utility plants it dechlorinates effluent before discharge and protects downstream biological treatment. Laboratories use it as the titrant in iodometric chlorine and oxidiser assays, and it remains the leach and fixing agent in gold and silver recovery and photographic processing.

Dosing is simple because the liquid meters directly from a drum or IBC through a dosing pump; the 2–3:1 ratio to free chlorine is a starting point, and the end point is confirmed with a residual-chlorine test. Keep the solution in closed containers out of direct sunlight and away from acids: acid contact releases sulphur dioxide and precipitates sulphur. The liquid is non-flammable and far easier to handle than gaseous or hypochlorite-based alternatives.
