Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate is a powerful alkaline builder and multi-functional detergent ingredient combining strong alkalinity (pH 12–13 in solution), emulsification of oils and greases, peptisation of soil, corrosion inhibition of metal surfaces, and buffering capacity in a single ingredient. It is produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with silicon dioxide (sand), then crystallising with five molecules of water of hydration. The pentahydrate form is safer and easier to handle than anhydrous sodium metasilicate due to its lower alkalinity release rate and reduced dust generation. In industrial cleaning formulations, SMS pentahydrate is the key alkaline builder in automatic dishwasher compounds, CIP (Clean-in-Place) cleaners for food and beverage plants, oven and grill cleaners, vehicle wash compounds, bottle washing detergents, and metal cleaning baths.
