Silica Gel Orange

Orange silica gel (CAS 112926-00-8) is the cobalt-free self-indicating desiccant: silica gel beads carrying an organic indicator that are orange when dry and turn dark green to black as they saturate. Global Chemicals LLC supplies it in 2–4 mm, 3–5 mm and 4–8 mm beads, moisture capacity 35–40% by weight, regenerable at up to 120 °C, in 1 kg, 5 kg and 25 kg bags and drums from stock in Muscat. It does everything blue gel does without the cobalt chloride, which is why European regulations steer indicating desiccant toward it and why it is the grade for anything near food, medicines or people.

Where it is used. Pharmaceutical and chemical storage, where desiccant sits beside the product; electronics, precision-instrument and medical-device packaging; control panels, switchgear and electrical enclosures in humid coastal plants; transformer breathers; instrument-air and compressed-air dryer sight glasses; laboratory desiccators and balance cabinets; and the desiccant sachets packed with spare parts, documents and exported goods. In all of these the colour tells the user when to regenerate or replace the charge without opening the enclosure or reading a hygrometer. The white non-indicating gel is the choice for bulk drying beds where colour is not needed.

Regeneration: heat the green beads in a shallow tray at about 110–120 °C for two to three hours until the orange returns, cool in a sealed container and reuse; do not exceed 120 °C, which destroys the organic indicator. The beads survive many cycles until dust, oil or chemical contamination reduces their capacity, which is visible as a weak or patchy colour change.

Handling and storage: orange silica gel is non-hazardous; the only precautions are a dust mask when pouring or regenerating and keeping the bags sealed, because the gel begins absorbing moisture from the air as soon as it is opened and a bag left open in a Muscat warehouse is spent within days. It is not regulated for transport.
