Potassium Iodide
Product Overview
Chemical intermediate and analytical reagent.
Detailed Description
Potassium iodide (KI, CAS 7681-11-0) is a white crystalline salt supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99% minimum purity in reagent grade, with analytical and USP pharmaceutical grades available, molecular weight 166.00 g/mol and solubility of about 140 g per 100 mL of water at 25 °C, in 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg bottles and 25 kg drums from stock in Muscat, for laboratories, oilfield testing, pharmaceutical and industrial users.
Its main laboratory use is iodometry. An excess of potassium iodide reacts with an oxidant to release an equivalent amount of iodine, which is then titrated with sodium thiosulfate to a starch end point; that is how chlorine and hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, copper, dichromate and dissolved oxygen by the Winkler method are measured in water, process and environmental laboratories across Oman. Potassium iodide also dissolves iodine for the preparation of iodine solutions and Lugol's reagent, serves in Karl Fischer reagents, and is a reagent in organic synthesis. In the oilfield it is used in fluid-analysis kits, as a tracer, and for testing oxidiser and residual-breaker concentrations in completion and fracturing fluids.
Pharmaceutical and nutrition: the USP grade is the iodine source in iodised salt and animal feed premixes, an expectorant ingredient, and the thyroid-blocking agent stocked for radiological emergencies. Photography and imaging use it in silver halide emulsions.
Handling and storage: potassium iodide is light- and air-sensitive; it slowly liberates iodine and turns yellow when exposed, which interferes with titrations. Keep it in amber, tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place, and make up iodometric reagent solutions fresh. It is low in hazard, but avoid ingestion outside medical use and wear gloves and safety glasses. Every lot carries a certificate of analysis giving assay, iodate and heavy-metal limits, and a safety data sheet; the laboratory chemicals guide lists the companion thiosulfate and indicator reagents.
Delivery is same day within Muscat, next day to Sohar, Nizwa, Salalah and Duqm, and by road across the GCC with a certificate of origin. Request a quote with the grade, pack size and quantity.
