Sodium Tripolyphosphate

Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP, pentasodium triphosphate, Na5P3O10, CAS 7758-29-4) is a white granular powder supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 94% minimum purity in technical grade, with at least 57% P2O5, water-insolubles below 0.1%, iron below 0.01% as Fe2O3 and pH 9.5–10.2 in 1% solution, in 25 kg PP bags from stock in Muscat. A food grade (E451) is available on request with its own certificate.

How it works in detergents. STPP is the classic detergent builder because it does four jobs at once: it sequesters calcium and magnesium so they cannot deactivate the surfactant or form soap scum; it buffers the wash liquor at around pH 9–10; it disperses and suspends soil so it is not redeposited on fabric; and it improves the flow and crispness of spray-dried and agglomerated powders. It is used at roughly 15–35% in laundry powders and automatic dishwasher detergents and in heavy-duty industrial and institutional cleaners, floor cleaners and vehicle-wash powders. The Phase I share (10–15% in this grade, per its specification) hydrates fast and helps powder processing; formulators specify it with the supplier. Several markets, including the EU, restrict phosphates in household laundry and dishwasher detergents, so check the destination market's rules for products made for export.

Other uses: as E451 it is a moisture-retaining and texture agent in seafood, meat and processed foods, within the limits of food law; it deflocculates ceramic slips and clay in tile and sanitary-ware production; in water systems it sequesters iron and hardness at low doses; and in drilling it thins and disperses water-based muds.

Handling and storage: STPP is mildly alkaline and the dust irritates eyes and airways, so wear goggles, gloves and a dust mask when tipping bags. It absorbs moisture and slowly reverts to orthophosphate in damp storage, so keep bags closed, dry and off the floor. It is not classified as dangerous for transport. Every lot carries a certificate of analysis giving assay, P2O5, pH, insolubles and Phase I content, plus a safety data sheet.
