EDTA is one of the most widely used chelating (sequestering) agents in industrial chemistry. It works by binding to metal ions — calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese — and preventing them from interfering with surfactant performance in hard water, causing discolouration, or catalysing unwanted oxidation reactions. In detergent formulations, EDTA prevents soap scum formation in hard water, stabilises bleach (hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite) formulations, and enhances surfactant cleaning efficiency. In water treatment, EDTA is used for metal ion control, boiler deposit removal, and as a complexing agent for iron and manganese. In cosmetics and personal care, EDTA acts as a preservative booster and stability enhancer. Available in food-grade (E385 — Calcium Disodium EDTA) for food and beverage applications.
