EDTA Powder (Detergent Grade)

EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, CAS 60-00-4) is the workhorse chelating agent of detergent and cleaning chemistry. Global Chemicals LLC supplies it from stock in Muscat in 25 kg bags as the two sodium salts formulators use: disodium EDTA (EDTA-2Na, CAS 6381-92-6, 99% minimum, pH 4–5 in 1% solution) for neutral and mildly acidic products, and tetrasodium EDTA (EDTA-4Na, CAS 64-02-8, 99% minimum, pH 10.5–11.5) for alkaline liquids and powders. Food-grade calcium disodium EDTA (E385) is available on request, and the laboratory grade is listed under laboratory chemicals.

What it does. EDTA binds calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese ions into stable, water-soluble complexes so they cannot react with anything else. One kilogram of tetrasodium EDTA sequesters about 260 g of hardness expressed as calcium carbonate. In liquid and powder detergents at 0.1–2% it stops hard water forming soap scum and precipitating surfactant, so the product cleans in Oman's hard municipal and well water as it does in soft water; in bleaches it chelates the trace iron and copper that catalyse the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite, extending shelf life; in cosmetics and personal care at 0.05–0.2% it boosts preservatives and keeps formulations clear; in industrial cleaners, boiler and heat-exchanger descalers and CIP acids it dissolves iron and scale deposits; and in water treatment it controls iron and manganese that would stain and foul.

Choosing the salt. Tetrasodium EDTA dissolves fastest and matches the pH of alkaline detergents and degreasers; disodium EDTA suits neutral shampoos, cosmetics and acidic descalers and is the lab titrant. Both are stable powders that dissolve readily; raise the pH with caustic if a strong disodium solution is slow to clear. EDTA is persistent in the environment, so formulators selling into markets that require readily biodegradable chelants can ask us about GLDA and MGDA alternatives.

Storage and handling: keep bags closed and dry; the powders are not hazardous beyond dust and, for the tetrasodium salt, mild alkalinity, so wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask. Every lot carries a certificate of analysis giving assay, pH and chelation value, and a GHS safety data sheet.
