Turpentine (Industrial Grade)

Turpentine (CAS 8006-64-2) is the volatile oil distilled from pine resin, a clear, colourless to pale-yellow liquid made up mainly of alpha- and beta-pinene, with a boiling range of 150–180 °C, specific gravity 0.86–0.87, a flash point of 35 °C and the characteristic pine odour. Global Chemicals LLC supplies gum turpentine in technical grade from stock in Muscat in 1 L, 4 L and 20 L containers and 200 L drums for paint, furniture, printing and manufacturing customers across Oman.

Turpentine is the traditional thinner for oil-based and alkyd paints, varnishes and enamels: it dissolves the binder cleanly, evaporates at a rate that lets brush marks flow out, and leaves no residue. Painters and furniture finishers use it to thin coatings, to clean brushes and spray equipment, and in wax polishes and wood-finishing blends; restorers prefer it over petroleum thinners on heritage woodwork because it was the original solvent of the finishes they are repairing. Artists' paints and mediums use a rectified grade. In manufacturing it is a solvent for resins and printing inks, a degreaser, and the raw material from which pinene-based aroma chemicals, synthetic camphor and polyterpene resins are made. Compared with mineral spirits it has stronger solvency and a faster, more fragrant evaporation; compared with naphtha it is slower and less aggressive on plastics.

Handling: turpentine is flammable (flash point 35 °C) and a skin sensitiser, and its vapour irritates eyes and airways. Store it closed, cool and away from oxidisers and ignition sources; it oxidises slowly in air and thickens if left open. Earth drums during transfer, wear nitrile gloves and goggles, and ventilate spray and finishing areas. Every pack carries a specification sheet and a GHS safety data sheet.
