Mineral Spirits

Mineral spirits (white spirit, Stoddard solvent, CAS 64742-88-7) is a clear, water-white petroleum distillate with a boiling range of 150–200 °C, a flash point of 38–43 °C, a medium evaporation rate and a Kauri-butanol value of 30–33, supplied by Global Chemicals LLC to ASTM D235 in Type I regular, Type II high-flash and Type III odourless (low-aromatic) grades, in 1 L and 4 L cans, 20 L and 200 L drums and bulk, from stock in Muscat and Rusayl Industrial Area.

It is the general-purpose solvent of the coatings and maintenance trades across Oman. Painters thin alkyd and oil-based paints, varnishes, enamels and wood stains with it, and use it to clean brushes, rollers and spray equipment; workshops and factories use it to degrease metal parts, remove adhesive residue, wash components before painting and clean printing equipment; formulators use it as the carrier solvent in industrial cleaners, wood preservatives, polishes and rust-preventive oils. Compared with turpentine it is cheaper and milder in odour; compared with naphtha it evaporates more slowly and is safer to handle; compared with xylene or MEK it is much weaker, which is what a brush-applied coating needs for flow and open time.

Choosing the type: Type III odourless for indoor painting and anywhere odour matters; Type I regular for general degreasing and thinning; Type II high-flash for parts washers and enclosed workshops where the fire classification matters. A certificate giving flash point, distillation range, density and aromatic content comes with every lot.

Handling: with a flash point of 38–43 °C mineral spirits is a flammable liquid (UN 1268, Class 3); store drums closed, cool and bunded, earth containers during transfer, and keep ignition sources away. The vapour is heavier than air and accumulates in enclosed spaces, so ventilate workshops and tank interiors and keep exposure within the workplace limit; it defats skin, so wear nitrile gloves and goggles. Rags soaked in it can self-heat when piled with oil-based paint; store them in closed metal bins. A GHS safety data sheet and technical data sheet ship with every pack.
