MEA (Monoethanolamine) — Oilfield Gas Treating Grade

Monoethanolamine (MEA, 2-aminoethanol, C2H7NO, CAS 141-43-5) is the primary amine of gas sweetening, supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99% minimum purity as a clear, colourless liquid with a molecular weight of 61.08 g/mol, boiling point 170 °C and specific gravity 1.018 at 20 °C, in 200 L drums, 1,000 L IBCs and bulk from stock in Muscat.

What MEA does that other amines do not. As a primary amine it reacts fastest and most completely with both hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide, so a 15–20% aqueous solution brings residual H2S and CO2 down to very low levels in one pass. That makes it the solvent of choice for small and mature sweetening units, for gas with low acid-gas partial pressure, for synthesis-gas and hydrogen purification, for biogas upgrading, for ammonia-plant CO2 removal and for flue-gas CO2 capture. The price of that reactivity is energy: MEA holds the acid gas tightly, so regeneration needs more steam than MDEA, and above about 20% strength the solution corrodes carbon steel, which is why plants keep the concentration and the acid-gas loading within limits and use a reclaimer to remove heat-stable salts and degradation products. Outside gas treating, MEA is the raw material for alkanolamide surfactants and foam boosters in detergents, a pH buffer and corrosion inhibitor in metalworking fluids, a grinding aid in cement, a scrubbing liquid for acid gases in industrial exhausts, and an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Handling: MEA is alkaline, corrosive to skin and eyes and combustible with a flash point above 85 °C; it absorbs water and carbon dioxide from the air, so keep drums sealed and tanks nitrogen-blanketed, use carbon steel or stainless equipment, and wear gloves, goggles and a face shield. Every delivery carries a certificate of analysis giving purity, water content and colour, a technical data sheet and a GHS safety data sheet.
