Hydrochloric Acid (HCl 30-33%)

Hydrochloric acid (HCl, CAS 7647-01-0) in commercial grade is a 30–33% w/w solution of hydrogen chloride in water, specific gravity 1.15–1.16 at 25 °C, a clear to pale-yellow liquid that fumes in humid air. It is one of the highest-volume industrial acids in Oman, and Global Chemicals LLC supplies it from stock in Ghala, Muscat, in 35 kg HDPE carboys, 200–220 L drums, 1,000 L IBCs and by bulk tanker. Where it is used. Water and wastewater plants dose it to neutralise alkaline effluent and to regenerate cation ion-exchange resins in demineralisation and softening plants, typically as a 4–6% solution. Facilities-management and O&M contractors descale boilers, heat exchangers, cooling-tower fill and RO CIP circuits with inhibited 5–10% dilutions, where the inhibitor protects the steel while the acid dissolves carbonate scale. Steel fabricators pickle at 10–15% ahead of galvanising or coating. Well-service contractors use it in scale-dissolution treatments, and process plants use it to acidify brine and as a general reagent.

Handling and storage. Store and transfer hydrochloric acid in polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, FRP or rubber-lined equipment; it attacks mild and stainless steel and most metals, releasing hydrogen. Keep it vented and under cover, because the fumes corrode nearby metal and electrical equipment. Always add acid to water when diluting, never water to acid, and never let it meet sodium hypochlorite, which releases chlorine gas. Wear acid-resistant gloves, goggles, a face shield and an apron; keep sodium bicarbonate or lime at hand for spills.
