In water treatment, calcium carbonate serves a specialised and critical role in remineralising desalinated water — replacing the calcium and alkalinity stripped by the RO process to create stable, non-corrosive water for distribution. Oman's PAEW desalination plants at Ghubrah, Barka, and Sohar use calcite (calcium carbonate) contactors or lime/CO2 remineralisation to achieve the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) required for potable water distribution.
