Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate (FeSO₄·7H₂O) serves several critical roles in Oman's water treatment and industrial sectors. In wastewater treatment, ferrous sulphate is an effective reducing agent for hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) removal — converting toxic Cr⁶⁺ to less toxic Cr³⁺ for subsequent precipitation. It also controls hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) odour in sewage collection systems and wastewater treatment plants — a major concern in Oman's growing urban sewer networks. In agricultural applications, ferrous sulphate is used to correct iron deficiency in Oman's soils (particularly in date palm and citrus cultivation) and as a soil pH acidifier for acid-loving plants.
