In water treatment, soda ash raises pH and adds alkalinity (carbonate hardness) to treated water — a key step in desalinated water remineralisation before distribution. It is also used to raise swimming pool pH (a safer and easier-to-handle alternative to caustic soda for pool operators), and to neutralise acidic industrial effluent. Oman's glass manufacturing sector (serving the construction boom) uses soda ash as a key flux in glass batch formulations.
