Our sodium metabisulfite effectively removes residual chlorine and serves as antioxidant. Sodium Metabisulphite (SMBS, Na₂S₂O₅) is an important reducing agent and dechlorination chemical in Oman's water treatment, food, and wine/brewing sectors. In RO membrane systems, SMBS is the standard dechlorination chemical dosed upstream of RO membranes — because polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are irreversibly damaged by chlorine, even at low concentrations. Oman's extensive seawater RO desalination infrastructure at Ghubrah, Barka, Sohar, Al Qurayyat, and Salalah all rely on SMBS dosing for membrane protection. In food preservation, SMBS (E223) prevents browning, inhibits microbial growth, and extends shelf life of dried fruits, juices, and processed foods. In the brewing industry, SMBS sterilises equipment and prevents microbial contamination.
