Oman's oil and gas production equipment experiences several distinct scale types depending on reservoir and produced water chemistry. Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is the most common scale in Oman's carbonate reservoir formations — it deposits in tubing, wellheads, separators, and heat exchangers as produced water pressure drops and CO₂ degasses, shifting equilibrium towards precipitation. It is effectively dissolved by hydrochloric acid (5–15%) or inhibited acid blends. Calcium sulphate (CaSO₄) scale (anhydrite, gypsum) is harder to dissolve and occurs where reservoir brines mix with sulphate-bearing injection water — EDTA or DTPA chelant treatments are required. Barium sulphate (BaSO₄) is the most problematic scale in Oman's commingled production wells — it is nearly insoluble in any standard acid and requires mechanical removal (coiled tubing milling) or inhibition before it forms. Iron sulphide (FeS) scale occurs in sour wells and requires specialised acid dissolvers.
