Corrosion Inhibitor (Oilfield Grade)

Oman's oilfield pipelines experience several types of corrosion requiring different inhibitor chemistries. Sweet corrosion (CO₂-dominated) is the most common in Oman's condensate-rich gas fields — organic film-forming inhibitors (imidazolines, amides, quaternary ammonium compounds) adsorb onto steel surfaces and form a protective hydrophobic barrier against carbonic acid attack. Sour corrosion (H₂S-dominated) occurs in PDO's deep gas fields — phosphate ester and film-forming amine inhibitors provide protection, but H₂S also causes hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulphide stress cracking (SSC) in high-strength steel, requiring inhibitors combined with material selection controls. Galvanic corrosion at dissimilar metal connections and under-deposit corrosion (UDC) beneath wax, scale, or sludge deposits require specialised polymeric dispersants combined with film-forming inhibitors. Corrosion inhibitors in Oman's oil and gas pipelines are applied by three primary methods: continuous injection (CI) via chemical injection quills installed at wellheads, manifolds, or platform injection points, where inhibitor is dosed proportional to production rate; batch treatment (pigging) where inhibitor solution is pigged through the pipeline as a slug to re-film internal surfaces — used for long tie-back lines or when continuous injection is impractical; and fall-back / squeeze treatment into the formation or tubing for downhole corrosion control. Continuous injection rates are calculated to maintain a minimum effective inhibitor concentration at the most corrosive point in the system (typically highest water cut, lowest temperature, highest CO₂ partial pressure). In PDO and OQ pipeline systems, inhibitor injection rates are monitored against corrosion coupons, ER (electrical resistance) probes, and chemical residual analysis to confirm protection.
