DEG (Diethylene Glycol) — Gas Dehydration Grade

Diethylene glycol (DEG, 2,2'-oxydiethanol, C4H10O3, CAS 111-46-6) is a clear, colourless, hygroscopic liquid supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99% minimum purity, specific gravity 1.118 at 20 °C, boiling point 245 °C and freezing point −10 °C, in 200 L drums, 1,000 L IBCs and bulk from stock in Muscat.

In gas processing, DEG sits between monoethylene glycol and triethylene glycol. It absorbs water from natural gas in a glycol contactor and is regenerated by heat, and its lower volatility than MEG cuts vapour losses from the contactor and the regenerator. TEG gives a deeper dew-point depression and is the usual choice for pipeline and LNG specification, so DEG is chosen where a moderate dew-point depression is enough, where the regenerator runs at a lower temperature, or where it is already the plant's design solvent. It is also injected as a thermodynamic hydrate inhibitor in gas lines, and it is the feedstock from which TEG is made. Other uses: a solvent and coupling agent for resins, dyes and printing inks; a humectant and plasticiser; the raw material for polyester resins, morpholine and brake-fluid esters; a heat-transfer fluid and antifreeze component in closed industrial circuits; and a drying agent for air and gases in smaller dehydrators. It is not for use in food, cosmetics or pharmaceutical products: DEG is toxic if swallowed, and the industrial grade must never be substituted for glycerine or propylene glycol.

Storage and handling: DEG has a high flash point and low vapour pressure, so it stores safely in closed carbon-steel or stainless tanks under ambient conditions; keep it dry, because it absorbs water from the air and that water ends up in the gas stream. Wear gloves and goggles. Every delivery carries a certificate of analysis giving purity, water content and colour, a technical data sheet and a GHS safety data sheet.
