Citric Acid Powder

Citric acid powder (anhydrous citric acid, C6H8O7, CAS 77-92-9) is a white crystalline organic acid at 99.5% minimum purity with no water of crystallisation, so every kilogram is acid rather than water, dissolving at 133 g per 100 mL of water at 20 °C. Global Chemicals LLC supplies it from stock in Muscat in 25 kg bags, drums and bulk to oilfield service companies, water-treatment contractors and industrial users; the ready-made liquid for reverse-osmosis membranes is listed under RO chemicals.

In the oilfield it is the iron-control agent of acidizing. As hydrochloric acid spends in the formation its pH rises, and the iron it has dissolved from rust, scale and iron-bearing minerals precipitates as iron hydroxide that plugs the pores it was meant to open; a few kilograms of citric acid per cubic metre of acid chelates the iron and keeps it in solution until the spent acid is flowed back. The same chelation makes citric acid a mild stand-alone descaler for carbonate and iron scale in tubing, flowlines, heat exchangers, pumps and tanks where hydrochloric acid would be too aggressive on the metal, and a buffered, biodegradable cleaner for environmentally sensitive locations and for equipment that will go back into food, beverage or desalination service. Field crews prefer the powder because it stores for years, ships at a fraction of the weight of a solution and mixes to any strength on site.

Industrial uses outside the field: scale removal and passivation cleaning of stainless steel, cleaning-in-place acid stage in dairies and breweries, pH adjustment and chelation in detergents and cleaners, and metal finishing baths. A food grade for formulation is available on request.

Handling and storage: citric acid is a mild acid, non-toxic and biodegradable, but the dust irritates eyes and the solution is corrosive to mild steel and concrete over time. Wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask, make up solutions in plastic or stainless vessels, and keep bags closed and dry, because the powder cakes in humid air.
