MEG (Monoethylene Glycol) — Antifreeze & Polyester Grade

Monoethylene glycol (MEG, ethylene glycol, CAS 107-21-1) has three major industrial applications in Oman. First, as a gas hydrate inhibitor: MEG is injected into oil and gas pipelines and wellheads in Oman's upstream sector (PDO, BP Oman, OQ) to prevent gas hydrate formation in high-pressure, low-temperature flow lines — it is the preferred glycol for large-scale hydrate inhibition because of its lower molecular weight and higher water miscibility. Second, as an antifreeze and coolant: MEG-water mixtures (30–50% MEG) protect vehicle and industrial cooling systems against freezing and overheating; in Oman's hot climate, MEG coolant extends water boiling point from 100°C to over 107°C, protecting modern high-performance engines. Third, as a PET resin feedstock: MEG reacts with terephthalic acid (PTA) to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used in bottles, packaging, and polyester fibres. For industrial cooling systems in Oman, a MEG-water mixture of 30–40% MEG by volume provides adequate protection against freezing and raises the boiling point of the coolant. Pure water boils at 100°C at sea level; a 40% MEG mixture raises the boiling point to approximately 108°C and provides freeze protection to −24°C — more than adequate for Oman's climate where freezing is not a concern. The benefit of MEG antifreeze in Oman is boiling point elevation and corrosion inhibition rather than freeze protection. A properly inhibited MEG coolant protects aluminium, steel, copper, and cast iron components from corrosion, cavitation, and scale formation, extending cooling system life by 3–5 years compared to plain water. Higher MEG concentrations (above 60%) actually reduce heat transfer efficiency and increase viscosity without benefit in Oman conditions. Automotive MEG antifreeze products include corrosion inhibitor packages; industrial MEG for process cooling systems requires separate inhibitor addition.
