Isopropanol (Industrial Grade)

Isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol, IPA, 2-propanol, C3H7OH, CAS 67-63-0) is a clear, colourless, fast-evaporating alcohol supplied by Global Chemicals LLC in 99% anhydrous and 70% aqueous grades, boiling point 82 °C, flash point 12 °C and specific gravity 0.786, in 200 L drums, 1,000 L IBCs and bulk from stock in Muscat and Rusayl Industrial Area.

Which grade. The 99% grade is the cleaning and process solvent: it dissolves oils, flux, fingerprints and light greases, evaporates in seconds and leaves no residue, which is why electronics assemblers clean printed circuit boards and connectors with it, printers clean rollers and blankets, optical and precision workshops clean lenses and parts, and pharmaceutical and cosmetic plants use it for extraction, as a formulation solvent and for equipment wipe-down. It is also a drying agent that displaces water from parts, a coupling solvent in coatings and inks, the base of windshield-washer and de-icing fluids, and a carrier in aerosols. The 70% grade is the disinfectant: that dilution penetrates microbial cell walls better than pure alcohol and evaporates slowly enough to act, so it is the standard for hand sanitiser, surface disinfection in clinics, laboratories and food plants, and sanitising pumps, probes and tools. Both grades are miscible with water and most solvents.

Handling: isopropanol is highly flammable (UN 1219, Class 3), with a flash point below any Omani room temperature, and its vapour is heavier than air. Store drums closed, cool and bunded in a ventilated area away from ignition sources and oxidisers; earth and bond during transfer; use explosion-proof pumps; keep static in mind when wiping plastics. It defats skin and irritates eyes and, in high vapour concentrations, the airways; wear nitrile gloves and goggles and keep exposure within the workplace limit. Every delivery carries a certificate of analysis giving purity, water content and colour, a technical data sheet and a GHS safety data sheet.
