N-Butanol (Industrial Grade)

n-Butanol (1-butanol, n-butyl alcohol, C4H9OH, CAS 71-36-3) is a clear, colourless four-carbon alcohol supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99.5% minimum purity, boiling point 118 °C, flash point 29 °C and specific gravity 0.810, in 200 L drums, 1,000 L IBCs and bulk from stock in Muscat and Rusayl Industrial Area. It evaporates far more slowly than ethanol or isopropanol and dissolves resins, oils and dyes strongly, which is the combination the coatings trade wants.

In paints and coatings it is the latent and tail solvent: it keeps nitrocellulose lacquers, amino and alkyd enamels and epoxy and urethane systems open long enough to flow and level, prevents blushing in humid Omani air, and improves the compatibility of resin blends. It is the alcohol in butyl acetate, the standard lacquer solvent, and in butyl acrylate, the monomer of acrylic emulsions and adhesives; it reacts with ethylene oxide to give butyl glycol ethers; and it is the alcohol half of dibutyl phthalate and other plasticisers. It is also a brake-fluid and hydraulic-fluid component, an extractant in pharmaceutical and antibiotic production, a textile auxiliary and a dye solvent. Handling: n-butanol is a flammable liquid (UN 1120, Class 3) with a flash point just below the summer temperature of a Muscat warehouse, so store drums closed, cool and bunded in a ventilated area away from ignition sources and oxidisers, earth and bond during transfer, and use explosion-proof pumps. Its vapour irritates the eyes and respiratory tract at low concentration and it defats skin; wear nitrile gloves and goggles and keep exposure within the workplace limit.
