Sodium Chloride (Laboratory Grade)

Laboratory-grade sodium chloride (NaCl, CAS 7647-14-5) is a white crystalline powder at 99.5% minimum purity to ACS reagent specification, low in heavy metals, with a molecular-biology grade that is DNase- and RNase-free, supplied by Global Chemicals LLC from stock in Muscat in 500 g, 1 kg and 5 kg containers with a certificate of analysis and safety data sheet for every lot. The industrial and food grades of salt are listed separately; this page is the analytical reagent.

What laboratories use it for. Buffer preparation first: phosphate-buffered saline at 137 mM NaCl, Tris-buffered saline, physiological saline at 0.9% for cell work and dilutions, and the salt gradients and high-salt elution buffers of ion-exchange and affinity chromatography. In molecular biology it provides the ionic strength of lysis, wash and hybridisation buffers, helps precipitate DNA with ethanol, and sets the stringency of hybridisation; in protein work it salts out and crystallises proteins and stabilises enzymes. Microbiology laboratories add it to culture media and saline diluents, and cell-culture laboratories to media and balanced salt solutions, which is why the molecular-biology grade matters: ordinary salt carries nucleases and endotoxin that ruin those preparations. Analytical laboratories use it as a primary standard for chloride by Mohr titration, ion chromatography and ion-selective electrode calibration, and as a matrix for conductivity and salinity standards in water laboratories.

Handling and storage: sodium chloride is not hazardous, but it is hygroscopic and cakes in humid coastal air, so keep containers closed and dry and decant what you need. Weigh molecular-biology grade with clean, gloved hands and dedicated spatulas, and autoclave or filter-sterilise the solutions you make from it. Solutions are stable indefinitely at room temperature.
