As a gas sweetening solvent, MEA absorbs both H₂S and CO₂ from natural gas, refinery gas, and flue gas in absorption columns at 40–60°C, and releases them at 120–130°C in the regenerator, producing a purified gas stream. MEA is the most reactive alkanolamine — it achieves very low residual H₂S and CO₂ concentrations (sub-ppm levels) in treated gas, making it suitable where deep acid gas removal is required. However, MEA has significant limitations compared to MDEA: high heat of regeneration (high energy cost), tendency to degrade irreversibly with COS and CS₂, higher corrosivity at elevated concentrations (max 20% vs MDEA's 50%), and foaming tendency.
