Polymer Bonding Agent

A polymer bonding agent (typically SBR — styrene-butadiene rubber latex, or acrylic polymer) is a liquid chemical additive applied to existing concrete or masonry surfaces before applying new render, screed, or repair mortar to promote adhesion between the old and new substrates. Without a bonding agent, new cement-based material applied to dense, smooth, or contaminated old concrete tends to debond (delaminate) within months as differential movement and thermal cycling cause interface failure. In Oman's hot climate, where daily temperature swings of 15–25°C create significant thermal expansion and contraction in concrete structures, bonding agent application is standard practice for all concrete repair and overlay work. Application method: the bonding agent (diluted SBR latex 1:1 with water for most applications) is brushed onto the prepared substrate and allowed to become 'tacky' (not dry) before applying the fresh concrete overlay. The polymer chains from the bonding agent penetrate both surfaces and form a physical and chemical bond across the interface.
