Potassium hydroxide (KOH, caustic potash) is a specialty alkali with distinct advantages over sodium hydroxide in several applications where potassium ions are beneficial or where NaOH is unsuitable. In biodiesel production (a growing sector in Oman's renewable energy push under Vision 2040), KOH is used as the transesterification catalyst instead of NaOH — producing potassium glycerol soap as a by-product rather than sodium glycerol. In alkaline battery manufacturing, potassium hydroxide is the electrolyte in nickel-metal hydride and alkaline manganese batteries. In specialty soap and liquid soap manufacturing, KOH produces soft, water-soluble potassium soap (liquid soaps and shaving creams), unlike the hard sodium soap produced with NaOH.
