Emulsion Sludge Breaker

A sludge breaker (also called demulsifier or oil-water separator for crude tank cleaning) is a specialty chemical that breaks the stable water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsion in crude oil and petroleum sludge, allowing phase separation and recovery of the entrapped oil before disposal. Crude oil storage tanks in Oman accumulate a bottom layer of dense sludge comprising heavy asphaltenes, waxes, mineral solids, and emulsified water — sometimes 1–3 metres deep in large tanks operated for 5–10 years without complete cleanout. Sludge breaker chemicals (aromatic solvents combined with nonionic demulsifier polymers) are introduced into the tank and circulated at elevated temperature (50–70°C), penetrating and dissolving the wax and asphaltene matrix, breaking water-in-crude emulsions, and reducing sludge viscosity to allow pumping. Once treated, the separated crude oil can be recovered and blended back into production, while the water layer and residual mineral solids are processed through the wastewater treatment system.
