Sodium Bi Sulphite Liquid

Liquid sodium bisulphite for pools (NaHSO3, CAS 7631-90-5) is a 38–40% solution, pH 3.5–5.0, supplied by Global Chemicals LLC from stock in Muscat in 5 L, 20 L and 60 L containers to hotels, resorts, water parks and pool-service companies across Oman. It is the chlorine neutraliser: a reducing agent that converts free chlorine to chloride within 15–30 minutes, bringing an over-chlorinated pool back to a swimmable level without waiting days for the sun to do it.

When to use it. After a shock treatment, when free chlorine is still above 5 mg/L and bathers are waiting; after a dosing-pump fault or a mis-measured dose; before draining a pool, spa or water-park feature to a drain or soakaway, where chlorinated water is not permitted; before adding chemicals that chlorine would destroy; and when chlorine is high enough to bleach swimwear, irritate eyes or corrode handrails and pump seals. The working rate is 100 mL per 10,000 litres for each 1 mg/L of free chlorine to be removed, which includes a safety margin over the stoichiometric quantity; dose with the pump running, wait 30 minutes and retest, adding a second smaller dose if needed. Dose in steps, because an overdose takes the chlorine to zero, drops the ORP reading, consumes dissolved oxygen and leaves the pool unprotected until chlorine is restored.

Side effects: the solution is acidic and will lower pH a little, so check pH and alkalinity after a large dose; it can also give a faint sulphur-dioxide smell while it reacts. Storage and handling: sodium bisulphite oxidises slowly in air and loses strength, so keep containers sealed, cool and shaded and use within a few months; it releases sulphur dioxide on contact with acid or chlorine, so store it apart from both. Wear gloves and goggles and handle it in a ventilated area. Every container carries a GHS safety data sheet and certificate of analysis giving assay.
