Sodium Molybdate

Sodium molybdate dihydrate (Na2MoO4·2H2O, CAS 7631-95-0) is a white crystalline powder supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99% purity in 25 kg bags and drums from stock in Muscat, as the anodic corrosion inhibitor of choice for closed cooling and chilled-water systems where nitrite or chromate are not wanted. It has low toxicity, is not classified as hazardous for transport, and is accepted for systems that serve food, pharmaceutical and potable-water facilities.

How it protects. In the presence of dissolved oxygen, molybdate adsorbs on steel at the anodic sites and forms a thin, insoluble ferric molybdate film that stops iron dissolving. Typical treatment holds 100–500 mg/L of molybdate as MoO4 in closed loops, at pH 8.0–10.0, often blended with nitrite, azoles for copper and silicate or phosphonate for mixed metals; the molybdate residual is easy to test in the field, which makes dosing control simple. Because it is anodic, under-dosing gives localised pitting rather than protection, so residuals are checked and topped up rather than assumed, and losses to leaks and make-up water are replaced. In open cooling towers it is used at low levels in phosphate-free programmes where discharge limits matter.

Where it is used in Oman: chilled-water loops of district cooling, hotels, malls and hospitals; closed process-cooling circuits in factories and power plants; heating and hot-water loops; hydrostatic test and lay-up water for new pipelines and vessels; food, beverage and pharmaceutical plant utilities; and engine and heat-transfer coolants. It is also a molybdenum micronutrient for legumes and some vegetables in fertiliser blends, and a reagent in laboratory phosphate analysis.

Handling and storage: sodium molybdate is low in hazard; avoid dust and ingestion, wear gloves and safety glasses, and keep bags closed and dry. Molybdenum is regulated in some wastewater discharges, so check local limits before draining treated loop water.
