Methylene Chloride (Industrial Grade)

Methylene chloride (dichloromethane, DCM, CH2Cl2, CAS 75-09-2) is a clear, colourless chlorinated solvent supplied by Global Chemicals LLC at 99% minimum purity in industrial grade, with a boiling point of 40 °C, specific gravity 1.33 and no flash point by standard test, in 200 L drums and 1,000 L IBCs from stock in Muscat, to registered industrial accounts; a higher-purity grade for laboratory and extraction use is listed separately.

It is the most effective paint and coating stripper in common use. DCM penetrates and swells polyurethane, epoxy, powder and multi-layer coatings so they lift from metal, wood and concrete in minutes without attacking the substrate, which is why maintenance painters, shipyards, aircraft maintenance shops and refinishers across Oman use DCM-based strippers, usually thickened to a gel with a wax or evaporation retarder so the solvent stays on vertical surfaces long enough to work. It removes adhesives, graffiti and cured sealants, degreases and prepares metal before coating, is the solvent in contact adhesives for PVC and rubber, and serves as a process and cleaning solvent in manufacturing. Its very fast evaporation leaves no residue.

Health and regulation: DCM is classified by IARC as probably carcinogenic (Group 2A), it is metabolised to carbon monoxide in the body, and its heavy vapour collects in pits, tanks and enclosed rooms, where it has caused fatalities during stripping work. Many jurisdictions restrict DCM strippers to trained professional and industrial users, and that is how we supply it: with the safety data sheet, a COSHH-style assessment and exposure guidance, for use with forced ventilation or in enclosed equipment, never in confined spaces without air monitoring and supplied-air protection. Although it has no flash point, its vapour can burn in air at high concentration, so keep it away from open flames and hot surfaces, which also decompose it to acid gases.

Storage and handling: keep drums sealed, cool and shaded, because the 40 °C boiling point means pressure builds in a hot container; use steel equipment and PVA or laminate gloves, which DCM does not penetrate as it does nitrile; collect spent stripper and sludge as hazardous waste for a licensed contractor. Every lot ships with a certificate of analysis giving purity, acidity, water and stabiliser content.
