Every country in the GCC shares the same underlying water reality: minimal natural freshwater, and near-total structural dependence on desalinating seawater for drinking, industrial process, and utility water. This is a genuinely regional chemistry problem, not a country-by-country one — the desalination technologies, the chemical categories required, and the operational challenges are the same whether the plant sits in Sohar, Jubail, Ras Laffan, Shuaiba, or Sitra.
Desalination Technologies Used Across the Gulf
Three desalination technologies dominate GCC water production, often co-located at the same industrial sites. Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) distillation, the Gulf's historically dominant technology, boils seawater in successive pressure-reduced stages and remains widely deployed at large legacy plants across Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) uses a similar thermal-evaporation principle at generally lower energy cost than MSF and is increasingly paired with power generation in hybrid utility plants. Reverse Osmosis (RO) — now the fastest-growing technology region-wide, including in newer Saudi SWCC capacity and UAE plants — forces seawater through semi-permeable membranes under pressure, and is markedly more energy-efficient than either thermal method, which is why nearly all new GCC desalination capacity being commissioned today is RO or hybrid RO/thermal.
Chemical Categories Required for Desalination Water Treatment
Each desalination technology creates a different chemistry problem, and each needs a specific chemical response. Antiscalants are the single most critical chemical category for RO plants: seawater's calcium, magnesium, sulphate, and carbonate content will precipitate onto membrane surfaces and fatally reduce flux and salt rejection unless a scale inhibitor is continuously dosed ahead of the membrane train. MSF and MED plants face the same scaling risk on their heat-transfer surfaces and require thermally stable antiscalant formulations suited to their higher operating temperatures. Biocides are essential at the seawater intake stage across every technology — marine biofouling (algae, bacteria, mussels) will foul intake screens, pretreatment filters, and RO membranes alike if left uncontrolled; oxidising biocides (sodium hypochlorite) are typically used at intake with careful dechlorination before RO membranes, since chlorine damages polyamide membrane chemistry. Coagulants and flocculants — Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) is the standard choice across GCC pretreatment trains — remove suspended solids and colloidal material ahead of both RO membranes and thermal plant intakes. Corrosion inhibitors protect the carbon steel, copper-alloy, and titanium infrastructure common in MSF/MED evaporator trains and RO high-pressure piping from the Gulf's uniquely aggressive combination of high-chloride seawater and high ambient temperature. Membrane cleaning chemicals — acid cleaners for mineral scale, alkaline cleaners for organic and biological fouling — are required periodically across every RO plant's operating life to restore membrane performance between full replacement cycles.
Why This Differs From Water Treatment Chemistry Elsewhere
GCC desalination and downstream industrial water treatment operate under conditions that make imported, non-region-specific chemical programmes underperform. Seawater feed salinity in the Arabian Gulf (often 45,000–50,000 ppm TDS) runs well above the global seawater average, driving proportionally higher antiscalant and corrosion-inhibitor dosing requirements than plants designed around Atlantic or Mediterranean feedwater assumptions. Summer feedwater temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C accelerate both scaling kinetics and biological growth rates, demanding more frequent biocide dosing and thermally stable antiscalant chemistry. And virtually every major desalination and petrochemical site in the region — Jubail, Ras Laffan, Sohar, Shuaiba, Sitra — pairs desalination output directly with intensive industrial water reuse (cooling towers, boiler feedwater, process water), meaning the chemical programme has to be designed across the full water cycle, not just the desalination train in isolation.
